THE R180 RATING

A fair measure of who beats whom.

Why it exists: averages show how well you score, but they can't be compared fairly between a best-of-3-sets match and a best-of-15-legs final. The rating looks at results instead, and gives more credit for beating a stronger player.

How it works: everyone starts at 1500. After every approved match, both players' ratings move. Beat someone rated higher and you gain a lot; beat someone much lower and you gain a little. Longer matches count more than short ones, a dominant scoreline adds up to 50% extra, and finals count 20% more. The base step is 32 points.

Only approved results count. Pending, rejected or voided matches are ignored. If an organiser corrects a score, every rating is rebuilt from the first match, so it's always up to date.

Confidence: Provisional (fewer than 5 rated matches), Developing (5–14), Established (15 or more). Provisional ratings can swing a lot.

Bands: Rookie (under 1450) · Club (1450+) · Contender (1525+) · Pro (1600+) · Elite (1700+).
